Lucanidae
Superfamily Dascilloidea
Family DASCILLIDAE soft-bodied plant beetles
J.M. Campbell
The status of Dascillidae has changed considerably
since Horn reviewed it (1880). Its size has
been greatly reduced by the r_emoval of species now
included in the families Scirtidae, Eucinetidae,
Artematopidae, and Ptilodactylidae, so that only
one species is now known to occur in Canada.
Fifteen genera and about 80 species are known to
occur throughout the world. The adults are usually
found on foliage; they feed on plants or are carnivorous.
The larvae live in soil or are aquatic; they feed
on vegetative matter such as roots or leaf mold.
Family RHIPICERIDAE cedar beetles
J.M. Campbell
Rhipiceridae contains five genera and about 50
species throughout the world. Only one genus with
one species is known to occur in southern Ontario.
The larvae of this species live on the roots of trees,
where they are parasitic on the nymphs of cicadas.
The adults are often found in
on the trunks of trees. with
around one female.
Superfamily Scarabaeoidea
Family LUCANIDAE stag beetles
J. McNq.mara
Lucanidae includes 14 species in Canada. The
larvae of all species breed in or beneath the decaying
wood of logs or stumps and therefore are of little
economic importance. The adults are believed to
feed on honeydew or sap. They lay their eggs in
bark crevices, especially near the roots. The adults
are attracted to light and are most commonly found
in wooded areas.
Howden and Lawrence (1974) published a key
of the North American genera, and since the genera
occurring in Canada include few species, specific
identifrcation is relativelv easv.
