Family PTILIIDAE feather-winged beetles

Members of Ptiliidae, a family of very small beetles,
have fringed wings with long filaments, which
give them a feather-like appearance. The family
comprises about 560 species around the world, of
which 32 are known to occur in Canada and Alaska.
Most feather-winged beetles are found in association
with moist organic matter, such as leaf litter,
decaying wood, and fungi.
Ptiliidae is probably the most poorly known
family of beetles in North America. Undoubtedly,
when the family is revised, many additional species
will be found, particularly in eastern Canada.
Hatch (1957) studied the western species. Bistrom
and Silfverberg (1979) examined many of the
generic type species and frxed the generic names.
Dybas and Dybas (1990) recently published a key to
the North American genera. Many Canadian
records require confrrmation, as the identification of
most species has not been checked by specialists.
