The family Oedemeridae comprises at least 100
genera arrd 1500 species, distributed in all faunal
regions. Thirteen species are known to occur in
Canada and Alaska. The biology of most species is
unknown. Larvae of some species live in rotten
wood, and adults of most species are found on flowers,
where they feed on pollen and nectar. One
species, Nacerdes melanura (wharf borer), is an economic
pest of pilings and ship timber. A few exotic
species have been reported to cause blister:ing similar
to that produced by some blister beetles,.
Arnett (1951) revised the North American
species of oedemerids; little information has since
been added to our knowledge of the Clanadian
fauna.
