Family CURCULIONIDAE snout beetles or weevils<br />

The family Curculionidae includes 609 species<br />

and subspecies in <strong>Canada</strong> and Alaska. AII <strong>of</strong> them<br />

are phytophagous. Most <strong>of</strong> the larvae live inside<br />

the tissues <strong>of</strong> the host plant, but some feed externally<br />

on the leaves. The adults feed on leaves,<br />

pollen, flowers, developing fruit, and fungi, and<br />

some burrow in wood; they do not necessarily feed<br />

on plants preferred by the larvae. Many weevils are<br />

host-specifrc and some are economic pests.<br />

Kissinger (1964) wrote a key to the genera.<br />

O'Brien and Wibmer (1982) published a checklist <strong>of</strong><br />

the North American species with supplements in<br />

1984 and 1989, the latter under Wibmer and<br />

O'Brien. The classification used here follows that<br />

checklist.<br />
