Cephaloidae is a small family of about 20
species rerstricted to the cooler parts of the Holarctic
region. l)nly nine species are known to occur in
Canada ernd Alaska. Larvae are found in old, rotting
logs; adults of Cephaloon are often taken on
flowers.
Species of this family are reasonably well
known taxonomically. Hopping and Hopping (1934)
and Arnett (1953) revised and reviewed, respectively,
the species of the family, but included only
the genus Cephaloon. Subsequently, Arnett (1968)
transferred the subfamilies Stenotrachelinae and
Nematoplinae from the melandryiids and pediliids,
respectively, to Cephaloidae. Both subfarrLilies have
been considered by some authors to be disbinct families
(Mamayev 1973), but I have followed Lawrence
(1982a) in accepting Arnett's treatment.
