Members of Corylophidae, a small family of
about 4315 species, are found in all major faunal
regions, but only 11 species are known to occur in
Canada. Adults are usually collected in moldy leaf
litter ancl piles of grass cuttings. Adults and larvae
are thought to feed on fungal spores.
The taxonomy of the Canadian corylophid
species is poorly known; reliable species identifrcation
is not possible at this time, and a number of
species have yet to be discovered. Casey (1900) prepared
the last revision covering the North American
species of Corylophidae. The classificatic,n adopted
here is based on Paulian's (1950) reclassifrcation of
the Old World taxa.
