The cucujids currently include 31 species and subspecies
in Canada and Alaska. The adults are usually
found under the bark ofdead trees, in logs, and in
decaying plant matter. Some species apparently feed
on fungi and decaying matter, others prey on insects.
Six of the species occurring in Canada, Cryptolestes
ferrugineus, C. pusillus, C. turcicus, Ahasuerus
aduena, Oryzaephilus surinqmensls, and O. mercator,
are associated with stored products; four ofthem are
among the most serious pests in the country.
Lawrence's concept (1982a) of the family is followed
here. Many authors rank the silvanids as a
distinct family. There is no modern taxonomic revision
of Cucujidae, but some genera have recently
been revised.
