The t ruchids comprise 19 species in Canada
and Alasra. Their habits vary considerably, but
they depend almost entirely on seeds for their
development. The larvae live in seeds of legumes,
notably l)eas and beans, and are often pests of
stored leguminous seeds. The adults are commonly
found in flowers and on foliage. The pea weevil
(Bruchus pisorum) and the bean weevil
(Acanthoscelides obtectus) are major pests of peas
and beans, and have spread around the world.
Borowiec (1987) published a key to the genera of
the world, and Udayagiri and Raj Wadhi (1989)
published a catalog of the world species.
