Family ELATERIDAE click beetles
Y. Bousquet
This family is well known for the ability of the
adults to click when lying on their back. It includes
369 species and subspecies in Canada and Alaska.
The adults occur on foliage and flowers, under bark,
and in rotting wood; the larvae are found in leaf litter,
soil, moss, and rotting wood. Larvae of most species
living in leaf litter and rotting wood are predaceous;
those occurring in the soil feed on roots, and some are
very injurious to crops. Adults of some species apparently
do not feed, whereas those ofother species probably
feed on tender plant tissues, such as leaves and
flower buds.
The classifrcation of the family followed here is
Hyslop's (1917), with slight modifrcation. His classifrcation
is preferred Stibick's (1979), as it is used more
widely. There is no recent taxonomic revision of the
North American species. Most species that occur in
the areas covered in this checklist could be identifred
using Dietrich (1945), Brooks (1961), Lane and
Lancaster (1971), and the taxonomic reYisions listed.
