Eucnemidae:
FamilyTHROSCIDAE throscidbeetles
Y. Bousquet
Throscidae includes about 30 North American
species, of which nine have been reported in
Canada. The adults, which look like small, stout
elaterids, are usually found on foliage and flowers.
The larvae occur in litter, in decaying wood, and
under bark.
Few authors agree on the position of the lissomines.
Crowson (1961) included Drapetes in
Elateridae and Lissomus in Throscidae; Burakowski
(1975) el:vated the group to family level; Lohse
(1979) treated the lissomines as a subfamily of
Eucnemidae; Lawrence (1982a) listed them in
Elateridae. I have followed Yensen (1975) in considering
the lissomines as a subfamily of
Throscidae. Yensen (1975) provided a key to the
extant genera of the family and revised t;he genus
Trixagus.
Family EUCNEMIDAE false click beetles
Y. Bousquet
Thirty-two species of eucnemids have been
reported in Canada and Alaska. The adults occur
mainly on vegetation and under bark but are rather
infrequently collected. The larvae bore into various
hardwoods that are usually rotten. Like elaterids,
adults have the clicking mechanism, but few species
have been actually observed to click.
The taxonomy of the North American species of
Eucnemidae has been poorly studied, and therefore
many changes and additions to the Canad.i.an fauna
can be expected. Horn's revision (1886) is the latest
one for the North American species.
