In Canada and Alaska 204 species of Scolytidae
are recorded. Most of the Canadian species attack
forest trees, especially conifers, and may cause considerabler
damage to timber. Both the larvae and
adults form galleries under the bark. Some of the
galleries may be so distinctive that the genus and,
in some ,iases, the species that made them can be
identifieci.
The North American scolytids are well known
taxonomically; Wood (1982) revised all t;he North
American species, and Bright (1976) covered the
Canadian and Alaskan ones.
