Twerrty-four species and subspecies of rhizophagids
are known to occur in Canada and Alaska.
They are collected most commonly under the bark of
dead trees, in rotten logs, and in decaying vegetation.
A few species live in ant nests, and some species of
Monotomit are occasionally found in buildings. Very
little is known about their feeding habits. Members
of Rhizophaginae are mostly predaceous, feeding on
wood-boring beetles, especially scolytids; those of
Monotominae are apparently fungus feeders.
The taxonomy of the Nearctic species has been
poorly studied, and most genera are in need of modern
revision. Crowson (1955) recognized four subfamilies,
two of which (Rhizophaginae and
Monotominae) are found within the borders of
Canada and Alaska. Sen Gupta (1988) recently
reviewed the world genera of the family.
