The flamily Phalacridae comprises about 600
species around the world; only five have been
reported to occur in Canada, but many other species
certainly occur. Adults are usually found on flowers;
larvae feed in flower heads of Compositae or on
spores aILd stomata of rusts and smuts.
Casey (1916) revised the North American
species o[ phalacrids, but this work is very difficult
to use. Phalacridae and Ptiliidae are probably the
most poorly known families of beetles in Canada,
and based on existing literature, a reliable specific
identifrcation for most genera is not possitrle.
