Communications Standards
Appendix C
Communications Standards
Introduction
The following standards are available for transmitting and receiving data for
confirmation services.
File Transfer Protocol
This communication protocol is available
through dial up point-to-point protocol (PPP)
and the Internet. Most commercial
communication software and many
shareware applications support file transfer
protocol (FTP) capabilities.
NOTE
Files transferred over
the Internet may not
be compressed
(zipped).
Electronic Data Interchange
Customers currently using electronic data interchange (EDI) for other
business communications may choose to use this standard for the
confirmation services interface. Information for this standard is provided in
this appendix.
File Transfer Protocol
There are two options, Internet and dial-up, for accessing Postal Service FTP
servers to upload and download confirmation services information.
Internet Web Browser
One of the easiest methods to send or receive electronic files is via the
Internet. If you do not already have Internet access, contact an Internet
service provider (ISP) in your area.
