Barcode Elements
This section describes the individual data elements that comprise the various
barcodes that may be used for Delivery Confirmation and Signature
Confirmation services and all integrated barcode solutions. If UCC/EAN Code
128 barcode symbology is used, a two-character Application Identifier (AI) is
also required. A UCC/EAN Code 128 barcode contains a variable length
sequential package ID. All other symbologies have a fixed length of 20
characters. See Table G-1 for data elements.
Data
Application Identifier (UCC/EAN Code 128 only)
Service Type Code — 2 digits
Customer ID — 9-digit D-U-N-S Number
Sequential Package ID — 8 digits
(This field may vary in length up to 8 digits if the
UCC/EAN Code 128 barcode symbology is used.)
MOD 103 (Code 128 only)
Stop Code
Start Code
All barcodes must have a Start Code. USS Code 128 and UCC/EAN Code
128 begin with a Start Code C. The start character is not shown in the
human-readable presentation, nor is it manually keyed or transmitted.
Function One
The Function One (FNC1) numeric character for UCC/EAN Code 128 must
follow the symbol start character and is part of the symbology overhead. The
FNC1 is also used to concatenate successive UCC/EAN Code 128 barcode
symbols and must precede an AI. The FNC1 character is not part of the
human-readable character set, nor is it manually keyed or transmitted as
data.
Application Identifier
This is a two-digit code within UCC/EAN Code 128 only for the Package
Identification Code (PIC) and the electronic file number.
The AI for confirmation services is 91 and must be shown as part of the
human-readable printed data for the tracking barcode. If concatenation is
used to include the package routing code (destination ZIP Code), then the AI
of 420 must also be shown as part of the human-readable print for the routing
