BARCODES
I’ve been told by the Postal Service
that my barcodes are not scannable.
What could be causing this?
GUIDELINES
Printer Maintenance. Customers should ensure they routinely maintain
their printers. The barcode and human-readable portion of the label
must meet the Postal Servcie quality specifications (see Section 3
Labels and Barcodes). If the barcodes do not meet the specifications,
the Postal Service delivery employee’s scanner will not capture the
Package Identification Code (PIC) from the barcode. Also, if the humanreadable
number is not clear, the delivery employee will not be able to
read the PIC well enough to key the information into the scanner.
Barcode Identifiers. Ensure that confirmation services barcode
identifiers are clearly marked. The National Customer Service Center
(NCSC) Certification Group certified your Delivery Confirmation service
and/or Signature Confirmation service barcodes that meet our
requirements specified in this publication. Periodically, check the
barcode to ensure that the confirmation services label identifiers are still
associated with the barcode.
On occasion, for whatever reason, your mailing software may drop off
confirmation services barcode identifiers (e.g., no horizontal bars above
and below the barcode, no text identifying the Delivery Confirmation
service or Signature Confirmation service, no human-readable PIC below
the barcode). Delivery employees are trained to scan the barcodes
when all of these identifiers are present. Without all of them, there is no
guarantee that a carrier will recognize the barcode as that of Delivery
Confirmation or Signature Confirmation service and scan it.
MOD 10 Check Digit. Ensure that the correct MOD 10 check digit for the
barcode is calculated correctly. The Delivery Confirmation service and
Signature Confirmation service barcodes must meet the barcode
specifications outlined in Appendix G, Barcode Specifications, of this
publication. Specifically, ensure that the MOD 10 check digit is correctly
calculated for the barcode symbology that is used for the barcode
specifications as outlined in Appendix G.
Parsing the human-readable representation of the barcode. If the
barcode has to be entered manually, you should group the
human-readable presentation of the barcode into smaller groups of four
numbers to allow easier manual entry by the delivery employee.
