30 EUROBALISE TRANSMISSION SYSTEM, A TECHNICAL OVERVIEW Discussion The discussion was opened by J Poré (Alstom) who asked whether the capacity of a line would be reduced by the use of balises, would this be dependent on the number of balises at a location, and what were the implications as far as maintenance was concerned? Mr Lundberg did not accept that there would be a reduction in capacity if an unfitted line were compared with a fitted one where the level of safety was the same, as balises would permit more trains to be run closer together. R Salawi (Alstom) raised the question of the time needed to acquire data by equipped trains as a cause of loss of capacity. The President ruled that this was not relevant to Eurobalise and asked the speaker to consider the value of multiple balises. Mr Lundberg doubted whether more than two balises would be needed at a location. As to maintenance, experience of present systems was good and was expected to be similar with the eurobalise. K Moxsom (Thales) asked what the result would be if a balise were removed by vandalism for example? The speaker said that this was dependent on how the main control system was designed. H Uebel (retired) asked how when powering up a locomotive it ascertained its location. The speaker replied that powering up in the “telepowering mode” would enable old or new balises to be detected and location established. D Donelly (Praxis) asked whether directional information could be encoded into the telegram, thus obviating the need for more than one balise at a location. Mr Lundberg said that the train itself must determine its direction hence directional information could not be included in the telegram of a single balise. C Porter (Lloyds MHA) asked why there were two sizes of balise, why what was probably the simplest part of the various systems seemed to be most difficult to finalise and could some of the design points and their problems be described. The author said that the two versions were the same functionally but the larger one would be used where debris on the track was a more severe problem. The speaker was not familiar with the history of earlier systems but the need to rigidly specify the new balise and to increase the data transmission rate had raised problems. A member (Balfour Beatty) asked about the effects of masses of metal in the proximity of the balise. The author said that this was covered in the installation specification for the balise. I Mitchell (AEA) asked whether when a train passed over a balise it had to be told to communicate with the LEU. Mr Lundberg replied that the LEU continuously transmitted its information to the balise but the balise ignored this until powered up by a train. The President thanked Mr Lundberg for his paper and his response to the discussion.
