Ruaha River (Figure 2)<br />
The Ruaha river within the Selous Game Reserve has two strata. The upstream end flows over<br />
rock bars while the central section is wide and sandy. Before enrering the Rufti it again flows<br />
over rocks. <strong>Crocodile</strong> densities were moderate - 1.57 crocodiies/km - with a ranse of oerween<br />
0.5 lo 2.74. This is comparable with prevjous cnunrs (t.56 crrrcorlites/km I Hutton and<br />
Katalihwa, 1988 and 1.77 crocodiles/km - Cames and Severre, t989; Table 3).<br />
Kilohbero River (Figure 2)<br />
The Kjlombero river is fed by the Kilombero swamp (5 500 km, approx) and is contained<br />
within a single channel fbr most of its course within the Selous. Thjs channel is interspersed<br />
with rock bars and has mud banks. The upper section (Ifakara bridge to Bomalanga meanders<br />
through a broad floodplain with extensive sandbanks. <strong>Crocodile</strong> dens;ties ranged between L04<br />
and 8.88 crocodiles/km (mean 2.86; Table 2) within rhe game reserve buiLlr,rpped to 0.34<br />
crocodiles/km once outside the boundary.<br />
1989 surveJ<br />
The density (crocodiles\km) for the 1989 survey are presented in Figure 3 as some areas were<br />
not covered in the present survey.<br />
