The European E-Business Report 2005
1.1.2 Investments in ICT
On average, companies from the 10 sectors covered reported an annual expenditure of about 6,600
euros for investments in ICT infrastructure and software in 2004. Obviously, investment differs
substantially depending on firm size (see Exhibit 1.1-5). Since industries differ considerably in terms of
the average company size 14 , comparisons should rather be made within the same size-band.
According to calculations based on Eurostat New Cronos data, the average firm size in the 10 sectors ranges
from less than 10 employees in construction, tourism and IT services, to more than 100 employees in the
pharmaceutical, automotive and aeronautics industries, with other sectors in between. This evidence is, for
most sectors, confirmed by the average firm size of the sample from the e-Business Survey 2005.
Based on the survey question D7 "What was your company’s gross capital investment in ICT hardware and
software in the past financial year?"
