1.1.2 Investments in ICT<br />
On average, companies from the 10 sectors covered reported an annual expenditure of about 6,600<br />
euros for investments in ICT infrastructure and software in 2004. Obviously, investment differs<br />
substantially depending on firm size (see Exhibit 1.1-5). Since industries differ considerably in terms of<br />
the average company size 14 , comparisons should rather be made within the same size-band.<br />

According to calculations based on Eurostat New Cronos data, the average firm size in the 10 sectors ranges<br />
from less than 10 employees in construction, tourism and IT services, to more than 100 employees in the<br />
pharmaceutical, automotive and aeronautics industries, with other sectors in between. This evidence is, for<br />
most sectors, confirmed by the average firm size of the sample from the e-<strong>Business</strong> Survey 2005.<br />
Based on the survey question D7 "What was your company’s gross capital investment in ICT hardware and<br />
software in the past financial year?"<br />
