The Manor of Alderton 3 rd edition<br />

built a monastery on the site <strong>and</strong> made Gidius abbot. He died aged 80 <strong>and</strong> was buried<br />

in the abbey 6 .<br />

Thomson 7 was of the opinion that the church was late ninth or early tenth century in<br />

foundation. It was extensively rebuilt in the eighteen forties, see below.<br />

After the Norman Conquest the major part of the Manor of Alderton was held by two<br />

lords -<br />

Hugh holds Alderton from Drogo. Eldric held it before 1066; it<br />

paid tax for three hides. L<strong>and</strong> for 3 ploughs of which 2 hides <strong>and</strong><br />

three virgates of l<strong>and</strong> are in lordship; 1 plough there, with 1 slave<br />

[feruo]; 2 smallholders [bordars]<br />

From one part of a mill, 22s; meadows, 15 acres<br />

The value is <strong>and</strong> was 60s 8<br />

But also<br />

Richard holds 3 hides in Aldritone from Ralph: Walter also holds 1<br />

hide. Alric, Godwin, Algar <strong>and</strong> Godric held it in the time of Edward:<br />

it paid tax for 4 hides. L<strong>and</strong> for 4 ploughs. There are 4 villagers<br />

Thomson goes on to say that “St Giles is esteemed the patron saint of cripples from his<br />

refusing to be cured of accidental lameness that he might be enabled to mortify himself more<br />
