half acre lies in "le Medlond" next l<strong>and</strong> of Henry la Palmar. And one<br />

rood lies in "le Banforlong" next l<strong>and</strong> of the abbot of Kyngeswod."<br />

<strong>and</strong> so on for the West field as well. It is interesting that one of the strips is said to<br />

have belonged to the late John de Hertham. Was this the same John mentioned in the<br />

Sheriff’s return above?<br />

Little has been learnt of the areas mentioned, but the area known as<br />

Schertebischoprithi may have been the Bishopstree <strong>and</strong> Bishoptree Meade (covering<br />

about 3 acres) of 1665 36 . In 1665 Castles may have been known as Chesseils, if so<br />

<strong>some</strong> was owned by the Parson of Luckington <strong>and</strong> the Lord of Luckington, the two<br />

owning between them just over 13 acres 37 . There was also a “Castle weir” in<br />

Surrenden of about 12 acres 38 . In 1839 there were two fields, to the north west of<br />

the village, known as “Chiswells”, covering just over 8 acres 39 . Interestingly they<br />

were occupied by William Palmer, is it this Palmer a descendent of the Palmer or<br />

Palmar mentioned five hundred years earlier?<br />

John atte Hurne appears in a later deed 40 , transferring to “Robert Welle, his wife<br />

Margaret <strong>and</strong> their son Robert thirteen <strong>and</strong> a half acres of arable <strong>and</strong> meadow lying in<br />

Schorston (Sherston or Corston?) <strong>and</strong> John Serjant. The Serjants are a family that appear<br />
