The Manor of Alderton 3 rd edition<br />

John Neeld was born in 1805; his twin brother Edward died aged three.<br />

John Neeld was educated at Harrow <strong>and</strong> then at Trinity College, Cambridge<br />

where he gained a BA in 1827 <strong>and</strong> an MA 3 years later.<br />

He was the MP for Cricklade for nearly a quarter of a century, between 1835<br />

ad 1859 <strong>and</strong> MP for Chippenham from 1865 to 1868<br />

When Joseph first bought Grittleton John lived there for a time. When, in<br />

1843, John was made a Gentleman in Waiting to the Queen 479 (a position he<br />

held until 1847) he was living at “Red Lodge”.<br />

John married Lady Eliza Harriet Dickson 480 in August 1845 but all was not well<br />

- Joseph was “long opposed to this marriage, no one knew why <strong>and</strong> it was<br />

<strong>some</strong>times a cause of complete severance between the brothers” 481 They were<br />

The marriage of John Neeld Esq MP for Cricklade with Eliza daughter of General<br />

Dickson of Beneham House Reading was solemnised on Monday 25th instant in St<br />

George’s Hanover Sq. The lovely bride, who was attired in rich white silk trimmed with<br />

Honiton lace, <strong>and</strong> a veil of the same material, was attended to the altar by four<br />

bridesmaids, Ms Fanny Dickson, the misses Meade <strong>and</strong> Miss Wylde [this was probably<br />

Grace Cecilia Wylde, she would have been 5 at this time]<br />
