David Sergent was Churchwarden (“although he became a dissenter in later life”
461 ) and was influential in the Sunday school. As Churchwarden he collected the
farmer’s contributions towards the cost of running the school and “if there has
been a deficit it has been made up by Mr Sergent” 462
Joseph Neeld, although an immensely wealthy man, was maybe not as well off as
people thought. Jackson recalls 463 a conversation where
Mr Neeld told me that people generally supposed that he
was hoarding large sums of money, it was not so. When all
his income came from the funds 464 , and at one time he was
the largest holder of 3 per cent, he had a large
unencumbered fortune; since investing in land it was greatly
reduced both in interest and in expenses and drawbacks…
He had spent his income every year for the last few years
Land may not have been as profitable as stocks and bonds, but Joseph became
one of the great landowners of the county – the tithe records show that in
1832 he owned land in 14 parishes with a total of 8848 acres, which equates to
