Neeld inherited Rundell’s immense fortune.<br />

In 1842 440 Maj Boldero fought a duel with Craven Fitzhardinge Berkley, MP for<br />

Cheltenham 441 , in Osterley Park 442 .<br />

with pistols. [Boldero] was charged with utterances<br />

disrespectful of the Queen by Berkeley. The two gentlemen<br />

were attended by Hons. W Ridley Colbourne 443 <strong>and</strong> WF<br />

Marriage settlement between Capt Henry George Boldero, captain in the Army, of<br />

Portsmouth, Joseph Neeld the elder of Rockstone House S’hampton, Mary Elizabeth<br />

Neeld, spinster of the same place daughter of the said Joseph Neeld, Joseph Neeld<br />

the younger of Inner Temple London <strong>and</strong> John Brereton of Blakeney Norfolk. Dated 29<br />

April 1828<br />

The relevant bit of the agreement, on page four, runs “And whereas upon the treaty of<br />

the said intended marriage <strong>and</strong> in consideration thereof the said Joseph Neeld the<br />

younger did out of his regard <strong>and</strong> affection for his sister the said Mary Elizabeth<br />

Neeld propose <strong>and</strong> agree to give his Bond to the said Henry George Boldero for<br />

securing the payment to him of the sum of One thous<strong>and</strong> pounds in the event of the<br />

said intended marriage taking effect <strong>and</strong> of the said Henry George Boldero becoming<br />

qualified for <strong>and</strong> actually purchasing the Rank of Major in the Army during the life of<br />

the said Mary Elizabeth Neeld”<br />

This would appear to be Nicholas William Ridley Colborne, 1779-1854 who was an MP<br />

for various boroughs between 1805 <strong>and</strong> 1837, after which he was elevated to the<br />

Peerage in 1839 [“Nicholas William Ridley Colborne, Esq. by thename, stile, <strong>and</strong> title of<br />

Baron Colborne, of Westharling, in the county of Norfolk”. London Gazette: no. 19730.<br />
