The Manor of Alderton 3 rd edition<br />

In 1374 John Goore witnessed an inquisition at Devizes 64 . Less than six<br />

months later Thomas <strong>and</strong> Robert Goore were involved in another<br />

inquisition, also at Devizes 65 .<br />

There is a Thomas who appears in the records of Lacock Abbey at exactly<br />

this time – in 1371 he witnessed a charter of the abbess Faith 66 <strong>and</strong><br />

twenty one years later another for her successor Agnes <strong>and</strong> the chaplain<br />

William Payn.<br />

In 1371 John Gore gave l<strong>and</strong> to the Convent of Monkton Farleigh 67 <strong>and</strong> in<br />

the last decade of the fourteenth century two more Gores are known<br />

locally – Robert Gore resigned as the Priest of the Free Chapel in<br />

Marlborough Castle in 1397 <strong>and</strong> two years later Nicholas Gore resigned<br />

the same position 68 . The relationship between these two - if any - <strong>and</strong><br />

their relationship to the Gores of Alderton, if any, are not known. There<br />

is a Robert on the pedigree at this time, brother to William.<br />
