John Neeld was elevated to the Peerage when he was made a Baronet for his<br />
political services in 1858. Fox, although talking about Joseph <strong>and</strong> writing over a<br />
decade before John’s elevaton, would not have been surprised -<br />
The honourable Gentleman [Jospeh], his brother [John] <strong>and</strong> brother<br />
in law [Boldero] deserve well from the Tories <strong>and</strong> Conservatives for<br />
they have been most stead <strong>and</strong> consistent supporters of every<br />
measure emanating from that side of the house <strong>and</strong> quite as steady<br />
<strong>and</strong> consistent in opposing every measure at all calculated to extend<br />
either civil or religious liberty! 489<br />
John Neeld continued to exp<strong>and</strong> the estate, <strong>and</strong> in 1872 he was the seventh<br />
largest l<strong>and</strong>owner in Wiltshire by area (eighth by rental income), a county<br />
renowned for its large estates 490 . This was the year in which he was the High<br />
Sherriff of Wiltshire<br />
In 1873 Sir John’s third son, (<strong>and</strong> eventually the third baronet) Audley Dallas<br />
Neeld, married Edith second daughter of Lord Vivian. Jackson was invited to<br />
the wedding 491 , which took place in London <strong>and</strong> was performed by Henry<br />
Kearney Boldero. 492<br />
