fabric” 397 . Joseph Neeld rebuilt the Church <strong>and</strong> made a new vicarage. Three<br />

of the original bells were recast <strong>and</strong> a new one made 398 <strong>and</strong> another<br />

commemorates Mary Neeld, Joseph's mother 399 .<br />

Commemorative plate in the Church was donated by the Rev Goddard 400 ; an<br />

alms bowl marked “1853 Edward Hungerford Goddard bapt d January ye 18 th<br />

1854 For Alderton Church Wilts” 401 <strong>and</strong> a platen marked with 1857 hallmarks<br />

<strong>and</strong> inscribed “Cecil Vincent Goddard bapt d Febuary ye 28 th 1858 For Alderton<br />

Church Wilts” 402 . (The only other plate described by Nightingale was from the<br />

time of Charles Gore – Thomas Roffe 403 bought a chalice for the church that<br />

was inscribed “Thomas Roffe of Alderton Church Warden Bought this<br />

Communion Cupe cost Three Pounds Anno Domini 1663”<br />

Joseph Neeld also built, <strong>and</strong> endowed, a school for the village. It was<br />

constructed from material of the old church. In Goddard’s time the<br />

schoolmistress was Jane White; from his description she was a formidable<br />

woman “Jane was an admirable disciplinarian if not a good penwoman 404 …the<br />

face of Jane White was enough to keep order in any school” 405<br />
