Letter from Alderton to the Church regarding the living of Alderton<br />
The village <strong>and</strong> manor of Aldrington in the county of Wilts hath time out of<br />
mind been accounted a different parish, <strong>and</strong> hath had all parochial Rights <strong>and</strong><br />
Marks <strong>and</strong> Priviledges of a different parish , vis<br />
1 A faire Countrey Church <strong>and</strong> Chancel wherein the sacrements of Baptism<br />
<strong>and</strong> the Lords Supper are <strong>and</strong> were time out of mind administered, <strong>and</strong> a<br />
Churchyard <strong>and</strong> it doth marry <strong>and</strong> bury as in other parish Churches<br />
2 It hath a Psonage House, a Psonage Barne <strong>and</strong> Glebe L<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> Tythes<br />
payed in <strong>some</strong> cases by ancient custom time out of mind in a different manner<br />
from the way of pying tythes in Sherstone in the said County: And the<br />
Parsonage of Aldrington hath been commonly accounted a different pasonage.<br />
3 The said village of Aldrinton hath Churchwardens <strong>and</strong> Sidesmen who are<br />
subject to the Bishop of Sarum, <strong>and</strong> goe to his visitation, & other visitations, as<br />
churchwardens <strong>and</strong> Sidesmen within the Diocesse of Sarum <strong>and</strong> make different<br />
presentments , <strong>and</strong> doe all things else belonging to Churchwardens of a distinct<br />
parish. And hath never any maintenance of any Curate from Sherston, or any<br />
other Paris, <strong>and</strong> hath always repaired their Church at their own distinct<br />
charges.<br />
4 Aldrington hath always had different overseers of the Poore,& all other<br />
officers & hath time out of mind bin severally <strong>and</strong> by itself, as a distinct Parish<br />
rated to all public Taxes <strong>and</strong> payments whatsoever.<br />
……..the Dean <strong>and</strong> Chapter (as the Abbots did before tem) have usually granted<br />
both the parsonages of Sherstone <strong>and</strong> Aldrington to one tenant <strong>and</strong> there being<br />
a small vicarage at Sherstone, the Vicar there hath supplyed the Care of that<br />
Parish; <strong>and</strong> the Church of Aldrington hath been supplyed by a distinct Curate<br />
which Vicar of Sherstone is presentative, <strong>and</strong> hath usually been presented by<br />
the lessee of the Deane & Chapter; & the same Lessee hath usually appointed a<br />
Curate to serve the Church of Aldrington & allowed 20l per annum for a long<br />
time for his maintenance this being as a donative<br />
