The Manor of Alderton 3 rd edition<br />

The Ivy family were Lords of the Manor under lease from the College in the sixteenth<br />

century but this branch of the family died out in the early years of the seventeenth<br />

century. “Hullavington passed….to their cousins who had long held the Manor of West<br />

Kington” 142 <strong>and</strong> as has just been seen Richard married a daughter of this side of the<br />

family. By marrying Mary, Richard also gained possession of a property in Alderton<br />

known as “Ivy’s Place” 143<br />

Mary died by 1565, because on that year Richard married again. He wed Mary<br />

Stourton 144 .<br />

Richard Gore upon the Thirteenth day of July in this seventh year of Queene Elizabeth<br />

covenants with Edward Bayntun of Rowden in the county of Wilts esq. to marry Mary Stourton<br />

daughter of Agnes wife of the said Edward before the feast of the exaltation of the Holy<br />

Cross [ 14 th September] when next ensuing. <strong>and</strong> to settle for her fortune the manor of<br />

Aldryngton <strong>and</strong> half the manor of Yetton Keynel (1565)<br />

This transfer was confirmed by an indenture dated 21 April 1570<br />

The blazon for these arms is Sable a bend or between six fountains proper. The fountain in<br />

heraldry is not a physical fountain but is instead a very special feature which is described as a<br />

roundel barry wavy argent <strong>and</strong> azure. Given that proper means in its natural colours the term<br />
