The Gores had known Elizabeth’s family in the 1540’s – her mother was Joan<br />

Bruckner, a daughter of Henry Bruckner of Melksham - Giles Gore had sold l<strong>and</strong> to<br />

Henry’s father, or possibly gr<strong>and</strong>father, Henry Brouckner, in Beanacre, Melksham,<br />

Shawe, Seend, Sendrow, Woodrow <strong>and</strong> Wulmer 174 . This was l<strong>and</strong> of the Manor <strong>and</strong><br />

Hundred of Melksham, which was<br />

originally given by Henry III to the prioress <strong>and</strong> nuns of<br />

Amesbury, for the maintenance of an obit(uary), continued to form<br />

part of the possessions of that Monastery until its suppression in<br />

1539 when it passed into the h<strong>and</strong>s of the Crown. The Prioress'<br />

estate lay in Melksham, Beanacre, Whitley, Woodrew, Wolmere<br />

<strong>and</strong> Seendrow. In 1544, five years after the Dissolution, we find<br />

messuages <strong>and</strong> l<strong>and</strong>s in these places (apparently, the same<br />

property) conveyed by Giles Gore. gent <strong>and</strong> his wife Elizabth to<br />

Henry Brouncker 175<br />

Edward bought l<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> the Manor house of Surrendell / Surrenden from John Hamlin<br />

176 in 1594, he then owned the entire manor. Seven years later he sold the manor of<br />

Grittleton to Henry White, who at about the same time bought Langley Burrell 177 .<br />
