COMPUTER SCIENCE<br />

VISION STATEMENT<br />

The Computer Science curriculum is committed to challenging the minds of its students and<br />

providing opportunities for students to grow in their ability to communicate effectively, to<br />

become critical thinkers, and to approach problems with creativity. The curriculum is also<br />

committed to preparing students to become successful, responsible citizens who aspire to lives of<br />

integrity and moral courage.<br />

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES<br />

1. Students getting a minor or B.A. in Computer Science should be able to demonstrate that<br />

they can write programs in a reasonable amount of time that work correctly.<br />

2. Students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of some of the key concepts in<br />

computer science.<br />

3. Students should be able demonstrate that they can communicate effectively, both in their<br />

writing and their oral skills.<br />

4. Students should be able to demonstrate that they can think critically by analyzing and<br />

synthesizing a problem in order to find its solution.<br />

5. Students should be able to demonstrate their creativity by using creative problem-solving<br />

techniques.<br />

6. Students should demonstrate that they are responsible citizens who aspire to lives of integrity<br />

and moral courage.<br />

7. Students should demonstrate that they are prepared for a career related to their degree or<br />

graduate school.<br />

8. Students should demonstrate that they value their experience at <strong>LaGrange</strong> <strong>College</strong>.<br />

ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING OBJECTIVES<br />

Level I:<br />

Student Course Evaluations: The goal is for 75% of students taking the SIR II<br />

in Computer Science courses to give a score of 3, 4, or 5.<br />

NSSE: The goal is that the value for the Computer Science program is greater<br />

than or equal to ―Mean - Std. Deviation.‖<br />

Level II:<br />

Course Grades: 75% of students should score greater than or equal to their<br />

overall GPA in their Computer Science classes. All of the 1000-level or above<br />

courses in Computer Science, Mathematics, Business, and Art that are<br />

required for the B.A. or the minor must be completed with an average grade of<br />

C or better.<br />
