INTRODUCTION<br />
PSYCHOLOGY<br />
The primary goal of this department is to teach effectively the science of psychology. Students<br />
will develop skills relevant to a variety of careers. Students intending to pursue graduate study in<br />
psychology or a related area will be prepared to succeed in this endeavor.<br />
LEARNING OBJECTIVES<br />
A student who graduates from <strong>LaGrange</strong> <strong>College</strong> with a major in Psychology will:<br />
be familiar with statistical methods and research design and be able to critique research<br />
efforts;<br />
be familiar with basic content areas of the discipline, viz., developmental, social, abnormal,<br />
personality, learning, and biological psychology;<br />
be familiar with scholarly resources in psychology and the APA style in which professional<br />
literature is presented;<br />
recognize the applicability of psychological principles to everyday life.<br />
ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING OBJECTIVES<br />
The accomplishment of the Psychology objectives by students majoring in Psychology will be<br />
demonstrated by obtaining an acceptable score on the Area Concentration Achievement Test<br />
(ACAT) in psychology. Normally, this test will be given during the student's final semester at<br />
<strong>LaGrange</strong> <strong>College</strong>.<br />
CAREER OPTIONS<br />
Students who complete the major in Psychology have a wide variety of career options.<br />
Psychology is a very broad field that overlaps many different areas. Some of the jobs taken by<br />
recent Psychology graduates include management and supervisory positions in business and<br />
industry and positions in community and state service agencies. A Psychology major also serves<br />
as good preparation for advanced study in law, social science, counseling, and psychology.<br />
REQUIREMENTS FOR A MAJOR IN PSYCHOLOGY<br />
A major in Psychology consists of 37 semester hours (12 courses) beyond the introductory<br />
course (PSYC 1101) (See Note 1 below). Twenty-five (25) of these hours come from the<br />
following categories:<br />
