STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES<br />

To achieve the mission and objectives set forth above, all courses seek to help each student<br />

ultimately demonstrate:<br />

a grounding in and familiarity with a basic historical narrative;<br />

an ability to master and analyze primary sources;<br />

an awareness of historiography and the ability to critically assess it;<br />

a capacity to creatively synthesize material from a variety of sources;<br />

a mastery of oral, written, and electronic communication skills.<br />

ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES<br />

Students graduating with degrees in History are required to successfully complete the capstone<br />

senior history seminar, research and defend a senior thesis, and pass a major field exit<br />

examination. Through these requirements, students must demonstrate their mastery of the<br />

major‘s objectives.<br />

COURSE OF STUDY<br />

The Department of History offers both a major and minor course of study in History. In addition,<br />

the department offers the following programs of study in Public History: a Public History<br />

concentration for History majors and a Public History minor for non-majors.<br />

Those wishing to major in History are encouraged to declare their major during the beginning of<br />

the Spring semester of their sophomore year.<br />

REQUIREMENTS FOR A MAJOR IN HISTORY<br />

The Department of History offers the following major in History:<br />

A. Prerequisite Courses:<br />

HIST 1101 and 1102 World Civilization<br />

HIST 1111 and 1112 United States History<br />

These are prerequisite courses for the major.<br />

Prerequisite courses can be met by AP, CLEP tests, or by transfer credit.<br />

B. Two (2) courses from:<br />

HIST 3317 Colonial America<br />

HIST 3319 Nineteenth-Century America<br />

HIST 4416 Twentieth-Century America<br />

Two (2) courses from:<br />

HIST 3301 The Greco-Roman World<br />

HIST 3302 The Middle Ages<br />

HIST 3320 The Renaissance and the Reformation<br />

Two (2) courses from:<br />

HIST 3372 Europe, 1660-1870<br />

HIST 3374 Europe, 1870– Present<br />
