an understanding of the contemporary issues facing public historians and the ability to<br />
critically respond to those issues;<br />
practical, hands-on experience working within the field;<br />
competency in the administrative methodology utilized at public history sites;<br />
the ability to creatively communicate information and implement historical presentations<br />
for a non-academic audience.<br />
ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING OBJECTIVES<br />
Students graduating with degrees in Public History are required to successfully complete the<br />
capstone senior History seminar, research and defend a senior thesis, pass a major field exit<br />
examination, and be successfully evaluated during a hands-on public History internship. Through<br />
these requirements, students must demonstrate their mastery of the major‘s objectives.<br />
REQUIREMENTS FOR A MINOR OR CONCENTRATION IN PUBLIC HISTORY<br />
The requirements for the Public History concentration are in addition to the requirements for the<br />
History major (though some overlap). The requirements for both the concentration and the<br />
minor in Public History are as follows:<br />
Required Courses (9 hours):<br />
HIST 2000: Research Methods in History<br />
HIST 3000: Public History<br />
HIST 4485: Internship in Public History<br />
Elective Courses (6 hours) Choose one (1) course from each area:<br />
One course in Administration and Methods:<br />
ANTH 1000 (Introduction to Anthropology)<br />
ARTD 3101 or 3102 (Museum Studies I or II)<br />
POLS 3312 (Public Administration and Public Policy)<br />
One course in Communication and Implementation:<br />
ARTD 2201 (Graphic Design I), 2223 (Basic Photography), or<br />
2224 (Documentary Photography)<br />
ENGL 3303 (Advanced Composition), 3310 (Art of Argumentation), or<br />
3315 (Readings in Literary Journalism)<br />
THEA 2110 Introduction to Design<br />
For a Public History minor, 15 semester hours are required, as outlined above. For a History<br />
major with a Public History concentration, a total of 48 semester hours is required:<br />
12 hours of prerequisites (see Section A under ―Requirements for a Major in History‖);<br />
24 hours in accordance with Section B; and<br />
