iotite grains, fish structures and rotated clasts (Fig. 2.6D, E) indicate a dominant reverse component of shear with a possible dextral component. Fewer shear-sense indicators and fabric alignment in thin sections cut perpendicular to lineation suggest that the major shear component occurred in the direction of lineation. This supports Tulk’s (2001) suggestion of reverse-sense motion on the Footwall Shear Zone. Apparent offset of the 1290 Shear Zone by the Footwall Shear Zone supports a dextral component of motion and suggests that the Footwall Shear Zone is younger than the 1290 Shear Zone. Shears with similar orientations to the Footwall Shear Zone have been inferred from ore shapes below 8000 feet depth (Seidler, 2008), suggesting that the Footwall Shear Zone may be part of a system of parallel shear zones. 2.3.2 1290 Shear Zone The 1290 Shear Zone strikes east-west and dips steeply 80° to the north (Fig. 2.5). It is observed on the 6400 Level (Fig. 2.7A, B) and in the back (ceiling of the drift) on the 7810 Level but has been mapped as shallow as the 5600 Level. Its width is reported to be greater than 6 m wide (Seidler, 2008) and is characterized by a strongly developed biotite-rich schistosity, near-vertical biotite mineral lineation and abundant quartz-carbonate (quartz with minor calcite) veins, oriented parallel to the foliated schist. The 1290 Shear Zone is ore-controlling and is associated with the 1290 Orebody. In thin section, the 1290 Shear Zone is composed of biotite, quartz, K-feldspar and calcite (Fig. 2.7C). The preferential alignment of biotite defines a strong fabric. Grain-size reduction is observed in quartz shear bands and larger elongate calcite grains align with the shear fabric (Fig. 2.7C). Larger grains are formed by multi-granular K-feldspar. 20
