Professionals in the sector register with various professional councils. All the councils made information
from their registers available for incorporation in this SSP.
Other databases
Information from the Education Management Information System (EMIS) held by the Department of
Basic Education, the Higher Education Management Information System (HEMIS) kept by the DHET, and
MEDpages – a private database of health service providers in the private sector – was used in the
preparation of the SSP.
Research reports
Extensive research reports on different aspects of the South African health sector have been published
in recent years. A selection of these research reports were used in the preparation of the SSP.
1.2 STAKEHOLDER CONSULTATION
In preparation for this SSP seven workshops were held and a few interviews were conducted with key
role-players in the health sector. Stakeholders were also given the opportunity to provide input to the
SSP through an electronic survey. The consultation focused on the following topics:
Strengthening of the skills and human resource base for the next five years;
The sector’s role in creating decent work and sustainable livelihoods;
Skills development for the South African youth and graduate output;
Equity impact in the health and social development sectors;
Key priorities for the next five years;
Key occupations for funding in the next five years;
Scarce and critical skills; and
Establishment of new qualifications/learning programme.
