Flavio Pellegrino<br />
Flavio Pellegrino opens his heart<br />
<strong>and</strong> pours it onto the canvas in<br />
colorful rivulets <strong>of</strong> oil paint. His highly<br />
expressionist brushwork flutters around<br />
the oversized canvas, crafting new<br />
worlds for us to explore. This is an<br />
artist who sees the divine hidden in the<br />
ordinary; inspiration lies right before his<br />
eyes.<br />
Born in Rosario, Argentina, the most<br />
southern nation on Earth, Pellegrino<br />
underst<strong>and</strong>s the importance <strong>of</strong> seeking<br />
adventure in the faraway <strong>and</strong> the<br />
mysterious. More recently relocated<br />
to New York City, he creates his<br />
beautiful visionary works there. From<br />
the aggressive brushstrokes we can<br />
discern city blocks with uneven skylines<br />
reaching out to the horizon like jagged<br />
teeth. We might find graceful arches<br />
<strong>of</strong> bridges which span sun-flecked<br />
waters beneath, or, in other works, the<br />
sensation <strong>of</strong> weather, warm <strong>and</strong> balmy<br />
or a frightful snowstorm with unforgiving,<br />
frigid winds. Music, religion, love, peace,<br />
the unknown – all <strong>of</strong> the world has<br />
potential to Pellegrino <strong>and</strong> this apparent<br />
innocence is both endearing <strong>and</strong><br />
inspirational.<br />
Behind the wide range <strong>of</strong> subjects lies<br />
a talented abstract painter. He stacks<br />
tonal values from dark to light, so that<br />
brushstrokes appear to nearly fly <strong>of</strong>f the<br />
canvas. This approach has the additional<br />
effect <strong>of</strong> employing flat strokes while<br />
maintaining a powerful sense <strong>of</strong> depth.<br />
Pellegrino’s palette cannot be readily<br />
defined, precisely because he switches<br />
gears significantly to tailor<br />
color to subject. Each piece<br />
is a revelation. Where burnt<br />
sienna <strong>and</strong> aqua preside over<br />
one piece, pale violet or bright<br />
phthalo green dominates<br />
another. Not willing to be tied<br />
down to one style, Pellegrino<br />
has also done numerous<br />
figural works <strong>and</strong> portraits<br />
that convey his characteristic<br />
passion for life.<br />
Flavio Pellegrino’s paintings<br />
have been exhibited in<br />
Argentina, Chile, Uruguay,<br />
<strong>and</strong> the United States. He has<br />
also taught art, written poetry,<br />
<strong>and</strong> participated in a number<br />
<strong>of</strong> artist collaborations.<br />
Throughout it all he maintains<br />
a humble <strong>and</strong> fascinated spirit. “I am just<br />
a guy coming from the river that always<br />
flows into the ocean,” he says, “<strong>and</strong> I am<br />
coming to <strong>of</strong>fer my heart.”<br />
