Becky Franco Twilight Oil on Canvas 56” x 42” Clarity Oil on Canvas 58” x 42” Cuban-American artist Becky Franco paints tantalizingly real images of everyday interiors and the common objects that surround us. Drawing on an extensive background in large-scale realism through an esteemed career in billboard artistry and public and private mural commissions, Franco offers her audience brilliantly executed objects set in interior terrains that reflect and expose the inner world, not only of the artist, but of the spectator who comes to view each painting. Franco’s mastery of her craft is apparent in each ultra-realistic image that depicts with astonishing clarity the details of our interior landscapes. Light and shadow play perfectly off one another, while colors serve to support and sustain the overall compositional tone. Much of what Franco has to show us is conveyed in edgy compositions that juxtapose objects in hauntingly familiar configurations, lending insight into the role commonplace things play in our lives. Franco’s most recent body of work pays homage to the theories of French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan, who explored the strange connection between humans and the objects they claim to possess. For Franco, seeing is a reciprocal process and we are, in fact, helpless in controlling how we perceive the world. Objects are not always as inanimate as they appear and rather seem to be biding their time, simply waiting for us to notice them. Franco explains their fascination for her: “The objects I paint have an emotional meaning. Whenever I look at those objects, they are like a little mirror returning a small part of my image to myself. Everything I look at defines me.” In this way, the objects captured in Franco’s paintings seem to come to life the minute the viewer’s eyes grace the canvas. Each object, with its cultural subtexts and hidden meanings, comes to define both the artist and the viewer, offering insight into how each comes to understand their place in the world.
