Masoud Abedi
We are often outsiders to the essence of Masoud
Abedi’s surreal tableaux, not because we
cannot relate to the scenes but because the artist
shows people in private moments, contemplating a
sight or engaged in inner meditation. The viewer is at
once a voyeur and a sympathetic eye, drawn into an
empathetic relationship with the characters through
the works’ clarity and control. The artist’s technique
of presenting his subjects with an unidentifiable world
around them is executed in an effective faux-realist
style that makes us feel almost as if we were there
– and yet constantly reinforces the sense of a barrier
between us and the painted figures, and those
figures and their own environment. This obstacle
feels contemporary, expressed through Abedi’s ultraclear
composition, his use of symmetry, and the
sense he creates of realism sharing the canvas with
surrealism.
Abedi’s work encourages a measure of contemplation,
Destiny Acrylic on Canvas 59” x 73”
as the audience is drawn to ponder the emotions hidden by closed eyes or faces turned away from our view. Moreover, the
mystery the artist maintains regarding the worlds in which these figures live incites interest and speculation, as we begin to
consider our own world and what we know of it. Abedi draws us in with skill, humor and most important of all, pathos. He leaves
our questions unanswered, epitomized by the tableaux that will remain in our mind’s eye.
Robyn Hills
Road to Arthur’s Pass in Rain
Photographic Print on Textured Fine Art Paper 18” x 24”
Infused with a vibrant, palpable light, photographer
Robyn Hills’ works are energetically alive in color
and magic. Her vision is clear and poetic, with
soft yet vigorous color and an astute use of light.
Formally abstract yet alluringly rooted in the natural,
Hills’ photographs are cinematic glimpses into a
particular moment in time and place. Refreshing
in spirit, the artist’s eye is egalitarian, and uplifts
all her subjects through her masterful composition
and cropping. She is resolute in her constant quest
for elevating the ordinary into beautiful, courageous
images. Traveling extensively throughout the world,
Hills always brings her camera with her in order to
document and beautify the world as she interacts
and dialogues with it. Through her camera, she
breathes in her surroundings, and expels an
exquisite picture of the fresh, striking natural world
around her. “My eye is always drawn to the play of
light and texture,” she explains. “With a constant movie going on inside my head, I visually seek out the unusual and abstract.”
True to her aesthetic vision, Hills’ photographs speak to the intangible, simple beauty of the natural world. A native Australian,
Robyn Hills continues to explore the world, but lives and works in Caloundra, Australia.
