Eberhard Marx’s oil on canvas and linen paintings invoke a spirit of ‘Magical
Realism.’ Marx, who produces his works in small and medium formats, is
influenced by the Dresden Romantic Period and the classic painters. Ancient
techniques as well as the predominance of realism in the former GDR and the
historical moment of its peaceful unification deeply inform his process as a
cultural producer. A perceptive painter of landscapes with the ability to evoke
emotions in others, Marx’s richly detailed compositions invoke a wide range
of associations - post-apocalyptic squalor, the aftermath of war, ancient ruins
and startlingly whimsical storybook abodes and metaphysical totems add their
impact to the canvas with equal vigor. Unifying these disparate themes, trees
as a symbol of upward momentum and otherworldly wisdom are an important
and reoccurring motif.
Eberhard Marx was born in Dresden. He studied at the University of Art and
Design, Giebichenstein and the College of Applied Arts in Heiligendamm. He
currently lives and works in Sinzig near Bonn, Germany.
Beauty of Broken Silence
Graphite on Paper 25” x 15”
Villages, figures, and rooms arch and twist with graceful curves in the playfully
elegant and expressive worlds created by Canadian artist Lara von
Waldenburg. She discovers a bright and exuberant energy in the architecture
of buildings and towns, alive with vivid color and crisp, sweeping line. In acrylic
and mixed media on paper, the artist creates intuitive scenes freely and without
restraint, drawing a subtle confidence into each brushstroke and mark as
she abandons any preconceived ideas and allows each piece to find itself.
“Remaining open to possibility I reach into the core, look around and expose
what comes out,” von Waldenburg writes of her process.
A strong sense of place rests at the heart of all of Lara von Waldenburg’s
paintings, profoundly influenced by the sharp contrasts between her French
and German heritage which were highlighted by regular visits to her ancestral
home in the French Alps and her free-spirited upbringing of frequent moves
throughout Canada and the U.S.
Although highly influenced by Renaissance painters, Constructivism and
Op Art, Veronica Barcellona absorbs most of her inspiration from the
visual motifs that surround us in the modern world, as well as the bold colors
and dramatic lines of contemporary cutting-edge design. She makes use of
the idea of the grid as a basis for her explorations. She tweaks the framework,
stretches it, fires it up and cools it down in skillfully chosen tones. The
selection of squares allows her to experiment with different styles, textures
and sizes, and she works regularly in paper, clay, cardboard and metal, as well
as occasionally using found objects and mixed media.
Barcellona’s work appears to be communicating the freewheeling,
unencumbered aspirations we all have in our hearts. Just as she re-imagines
conventional shapes so that we see them anew and can experience the moods
she creates as if for the first time, the artist also examines her subjective
experiences and communicates them in her work, so that we are allied with
her in her ongoing aesthetic explorations.
