Carolyn Rogers
Elio Talon
Audaciously curvilinear forms glide through space in Elio
Talon’s skillful, sumptuous sculptures. His artistry rooted
in the written word, Talon gives a visual presence to the
verbs of space, the classical archetypes of universal mythology.
Through soulful, graceful workmanship, he envisions a
reconciling peace through startlingly smooth texture and softly
articulated shapes. Patient and painstaking, the artist carefully
molds his materials, inspiring a sense of the serene in the
resulting pieces, each work a profound prayer to strengthen
and encourage the soul within all of us. Italian by ancestry and
birth, Talon’s family lauded men over women; to balance this
tendency, the artist fully and completely venerates the goddess
and woman in his strong imagery and beautiful forms. Through
this work, he seeks to enunciate the forgotten, ignored stories
and languages too quiet to be heard among the noise of everyday
life. Each piece, fully and purely individual in its purpose
in space, is imbibed with a transcending calm and tranquility.
Talon discusses his intentions: “I try to take humanity back to
the origins of joy and love in order to permit the soul to assert
its right to life. Through light I recompose matter and spirit into
the clay, with a shamanic gesture to call the archetypes of male
and female, and to finally grant a unity to human experience.”
After attaining a degree in law, Elio Talon attended the Academy
of Fine Arts and shows his work in New York City.
Carolyn Rogers’ striking black and white photographs
create permanent images of fleeting subjects. Based in
Washington, DC, she photographs everyday details most of
us are too busy to notice or, in a recent series, idyllic tropical
beachscapes. These brief moments of respite and beauty
stand in sharp contrast to the permanence and complexity
of Rogers’ printing process. Each scintillating platinum and
palladium print is unique, the result of a complex manipulation
more akin to painting than traditional photography. This
historical printing process makes for especially radiant images,
with brilliant bright areas and shaded sections a deep, crisp
black. The sharpness of the photographs lends their subjects
an air of stillness; even swaying palms seem forever frozen.
Rogers creates this tranquility in her subjects and viewers
by exposing overlooked details and sweeping views in deep
focus. Her sensitivity to composition across these disparate
subjects astounds, full of gentle diagonals, classical framing
devices and surprising verticals, leading our eyes calmly
towards the horizon and then abruptly redirecting our vision
with new lines. Her knack for spotting and isolating sequences
and repetitions in her subjects accentuates this startling effect,
teasing visual expectations of continuity and symmetry before
revealing unexpected twists and variations. Through these
clever manipulations of conventional composition Rogers
creates incredible dynamism in her intricate photographs.
