Caribbean artist Thierry Fazian
creates mixed media paintings and
collages steeped in an extraordinary
existentialist symbolism, a redefinition
of meaning that owes its form and
style to Fazian’s innovative blending of
European surrealism and Caribbean
mysticism. Born in Guadeloupe in the
French West Indies, Fazian has been
greatly influenced by his homeland, a
landscape defined by the melting pot of
civilizations that call these islands home.
Here one finds a crossroad of European,
African, American, Eastern Asian,
Indian, and American Indian traditions
. . . an amalgamation of all the many
cultures that make up the Caribbean.
His artwork directly reflects this hybridity,
a cross between painting and sculpture
that trends away from classical high
relief works to a more modern version
of this art form. This style has been
called “sculpicture” and is the hallmark
of Fazian’s work.
Using contemporary mediums and
matter like acrylics, resins, and

computer generated images, Fazian
crafts vistas pleasingly complex and
rich in color and texture, juxtaposing
seemingly contradictory elements with
surprising results. Through his masterful
use of composition, these disparate
elements come together in new and
harmonious ways, creating works that

paradox of expressionism that translates
into a sense of peaceful acceptance
in the face of incongruity. What results
