With a boldly toned earthen palette, Spanish painter
Carmen Sotuela portrays the dazzling beauty of nature.
Precise, careful brushstrokes allow her to deftly conjure the
mysteries and magnificence of streams, trees, flowers and
plants found near her home and throughout the world. Sotuela
seeks to penetrate the surface of nature, exploring the rich
plethora of patterns, shapes and textures found in the natural
world. Her primary medium is oil paints, which she uses
expertly, imbuing ordinary, bucolic scenes with a stirring,
poetic sense of the pastoral. Taking themes and motifs from
her immediate surroundings, Sotuela sparks soul into even the
most banal of subjects, reminding us to search relentlessly for
beauty in every moment of our lives.
It is through painting that Soteula seeks to uplift humanity from
the disasters and tragedies of life. “I’ve always felt concern for,
and a commitment to aid, the human suffering caused by the
injustices and disasters in the world, especially as they affect
the most disadvantaged members of society, including women
and their undervalued hard work,” she says. “I employ symbols
that make us reflect on social problems, showing always a
hope for a better world, part of an essential quest for love and
coexistence between people.”
Born in Ponferrada, León, Carmen Sotuela now lives and
works in Málaga, exhibiting her work worldwide.
