Søs Beck works in abstract oil paints as well as sculptures,
and her work is always a combination of freewheeling energy
and a confident examination of tone, mood, unconventional
shapes and textures. When she paints with wax, she
appears to be sculpting some personal breathing space, and
her bronze sculptures present themselves as laden with both
a world-weariness and dignity won from a lifetime of struggle.
While the sculptures have a strong organic presence, her
paintings explore the abstract inner life and its turbulent processes
that engage in the act of creation. Although her images
often spread out on her canvas like vines, and seem to flower
into a mix of the identifiable and the abstract, she carefully
chooses very specific shapes and forms that have a certain
psychological resonance for the viewer.
She also uses a myriad of colors in her elaborate creations,
including sea blues, sunshine yellows and fiery reds. These
are all part of the visual language that she taps into as she
builds a bridge between her specific aesthetic gestures and
the archetypal essence she strives to reveal. Having grown
up on a Danish island, her lifelong love of nature informs her
aesthetic choices, whatever medium she chooses. Søs Beck
is intimately aware of universal shapes and tones that draw us
into her dramatic works.

Since 1991, Art Start has been providing free arts
programs for some of New York City’s most
at-risk youth: homeless children, young people in
foster care or teenagers living on the street.
Through workshops in painting, photography,
music and creative writing, we replace uncertainty
and frustration in their lives with structure and
hope. Above all, we provide them with genuine
opportunities to change their worlds, and ours, for
the better.
