Cary Griffiths
Lyrical Composition: in Yellow and Black with Blue Acrylic on Canvas 16” x 20”
In the abstract images of American artist Cary
Griffiths, visions of color and movement converge
to create unexpected configurations of line and form.
Upon first glance, his abstract images seem simple,
yet there is a complexity inherent in the manner
in which everything comes together, creating an
extraordinary synchronicity that speaks of a depth of
meaning and purpose in each of his works.
Music has a profound influence on the way Griffiths
approaches his art. He paints to the sound of music
playing, enabling him to capture the rhythm, melody
and lyricism we normally associate with music within
the form, color and content of his work. What results
are images that are associated with movement and
emotions, an imagery of pure emotive expression.
In the end, Griffiths strives to create an art that is
meant for everyone, to which anyone can connect
regardless of background or intent. For him, the
representational aspect of painting is less important than his interpretation of the reality of the emotive force the thing contains.
As he explains, “In the melody of modern abstract art, [the viewer] may see and hear emotional content: pathos, joy, fury,
forgiveness, betrayal, love. My vision is to create the peace that comes from finding that relationship with abstract painting which
is borne of recognition, catharsis and finally, solace.”
H. Scott Cushing
The Long Island-based, Brooklyn-born
photographer H. Scott Cushing transcends
his medium’s conventions using digital and graphic
techniques. In doing so he creates visually arresting
images that have a crisp, formal photographic beauty
and a more surreal sense of pattern and repetition.
His cloud-speckled skies and seascapes are full of
dramatic light, thick volumes and unexpected colors,
like pointillist paintings. By reflecting and reshaping
his photos with one or more mirroring effects, he
creates a powerful structural geometry, and an effect
that both puzzles and intrigues the viewer. Suddenly,
stunning vistas reveal themselves to be technological
products as much as natural phenomena.
Cushing explores the thin, at times nearly nonexistent
space between what we recognize and can
easily assimilate, and that which is categorically
new and impossible to ignore. His work combines
aesthetic beauty and formal audacity. Some pieces remain very easily identifiable as cloudy skies, but in others the combination
of naturally occurring symmetries and compounded mirror effects turns the image into an abstract cascade of patterned light
modulations. Cushing turns these stunning skies upside-down and inside-out, effectively negating gravity, creating suspended
spaces with no up or down, but possessing astounding visual power. In a way, then, the images approach minimalism, imagining
pure spaces independent of figures or settings, with infinite potential.
