Background Information on the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> Welfare<br />

The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> California (UC) Berkeley, <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> Welfare is one <strong>of</strong> the oldest<br />

<strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong> graduate programs in the United States (<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> Welfare, <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

California, Berkeley, 2012). The <strong>School</strong> developed out <strong>of</strong> an undergraduate curriculum in <strong>Social</strong><br />

Services in the 1930’s into a pr<strong>of</strong>essional program in 1944 (<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> Welfare, <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> California, Berkeley, 2012). It now <strong>of</strong>fers an undergraduate major in <strong>Social</strong> Welfare, Master<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong>, and PhD program (<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> Welfare, <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> California, Berkeley,<br />

2012). The <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> Welfare is made up <strong>of</strong> twenty-three full-time faculty, twenty-four<br />

lecturers, and fourteen staff members (See Appendix C for faculty members’ areas <strong>of</strong> research).<br />

The <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> Welfare began to develop their <strong>Equity</strong>, Inclusion and Diversity<br />

Strategic Plan in the autumn <strong>of</strong> 2010. It followed UC Berkeley’s Initiative for <strong>Equity</strong>, Inclusion<br />

and Diversity. (See Appendix D for information on UC Berkeley’s Initiative for <strong>Equity</strong>,<br />

Inclusion and Diversity.)<br />

Description <strong>of</strong> Educational <strong>Equity</strong> Initiatives<br />

The main focus <strong>of</strong> the third goal <strong>of</strong> UC Berkeley’s EID Strategic Plan involved<br />

encouraging each department at the university to develop an EID Strategic Plan specific to the<br />

needs <strong>of</strong> their program. As such, in the autumn <strong>of</strong> 2010, the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> Welfare began to<br />

create their <strong>Equity</strong>, Inclusion and Diversity Strategic Plan. The objectives <strong>of</strong> the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Social</strong> Welfare’s EID Strategic Plan include graduate student outreach, graduate student support,
