affirmative action guidelines, there is an Office for Faculty <strong>Equity</strong> and Welfare at the <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> California Berkeley (<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> California, Berkeley, 2012). The Office for Faculty <strong>Equity</strong><br />

and Welfare is:<br />

Committed to full participation in academic careers for all scholars, including individuals<br />

who are members <strong>of</strong> groups that have been historically underrepresented in higher<br />

education such as women, ethnic minorities, religious minorities, differently-abled,<br />

lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender and others. The <strong>of</strong>fice accomplishes this through<br />

promoting inclusive hiring practices, developing supportive academic personnel policies,<br />

conducting cutting-edge research on faculty equity, monitoring faculty advancement,<br />

advising faculty about tenure and advancement, and promoting faculty retention by<br />

building a vibrant and diverse academic community. The Office for Faculty <strong>Equity</strong> &<br />

Welfare provides information and advice on a variety <strong>of</strong> issues important to faculty<br />

welfare through advocacy and workshops on topics such as mentoring, tenure, and grant<br />

writing. The Office for Faculty <strong>Equity</strong> & Welfare provides information, advice and<br />

conflict resolution around a variety <strong>of</strong> issues important to faculty welfare, in consultation<br />

with the Vice Provost for the Faculty. The Office for Faculty <strong>Equity</strong> & Welfare also<br />

works closely with the Office <strong>of</strong> Academic Personnel (appointment and advancement),<br />

the Campus Climate and Compliance Office (sexual harassment, sex or race<br />

discrimination), the Office <strong>of</strong> Academic Compliance and Disability Standards (disability
