is creating a position similar to that <strong>of</strong> the Diversity Coordinator at UC Berkeley and the <strong>Equity</strong><br />
Advisor at U <strong>of</strong> T. However, it is important to caution that this may position will be less<br />
effective if it is an ‘add-on’ to a staff position that already exists. It is necessary to ensure that<br />
the role <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Equity</strong> Advisor/Coordinator is dedicated to addressing equity issues in all <strong>of</strong> their<br />
tasks.<br />
In addition to leadership and strategic commitment from faculty members and staff, it is<br />
imperative that there is student involvement in the development and continuing implementation<br />
<strong>of</strong> educational equity policies and practices and in the governance structures created to achieve<br />
equity. For example, at UC Berkeley’s <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> Welfare, the Diversity Task Force was<br />
initiated by students. This task force is involved in student leadership on several levels. The<br />
Diversity Task Force is part <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Social</strong> Welfare Graduate Assembly (SWGA), which is a<br />
student run organization that represents the graduate student body at the <strong>School</strong>. As such, the<br />
task force plays a role in providing student input on curriculum and policies at the <strong>School</strong>. At<br />
