UBC school <strong>of</strong> social work equity and diversity strategic plan: A compilation <strong>of</strong> case studies 2<br />

Executive Summary<br />

This report provides recommendations for the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong> at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

British Columbia (UBC) for the development <strong>of</strong> a comprehensive equity policy and plan (the<br />

Educational <strong>Equity</strong> and Diversity Strategic Plan). It includes five individual case studies <strong>of</strong> both<br />

Canadian and international <strong>School</strong>s and Faculties <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong>, which provide examples <strong>of</strong><br />

policies, practices, and processes in furthering educational equity, diversity, and inclusion. In<br />

addition to the individual case studies, this report contains a final analytical section, called <strong>Equity</strong><br />

in Action: An Analysis <strong>of</strong> Exemplary Processes and Practices (p. 55). This analysis ends with<br />

lessons learned and suggestions for policy and practice. The information and analysis are<br />

presented under seven themes that are <strong>of</strong> critical consideration in implementing equity plans:<br />

leadership, governance, and strategic commitment; staff and faculty recruitment and retention;<br />

student outreach, admission, and support; scholarship; curriculum; pedagogy; and climate.<br />

This report – in addition to the other phases <strong>of</strong> the Educational <strong>Equity</strong> and Diversity<br />

Strategic Plan, which include a literature review/annotated bibliography and extensive<br />

consultation with stakeholders through dialogue groups, a survey, focus groups, and interviews –<br />

provides content and recommendations for a plan to move forward and sustain equity at the UBC<br />

<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong>. The next phase <strong>of</strong> this project will include interviews with faculty and<br />

staff, as well as a written analysis <strong>of</strong> themes emerging from these interviews, which will lead to<br />

the drafting <strong>of</strong> a plan for the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong>.
