Background Information on the Factor-Inwentash Faculty <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong><br />

The Factor-Inwentash Faculty <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong> at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Toronto was<br />

established in 1914 and is Canada’s oldest <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong>, as well as one <strong>of</strong> the oldest in<br />

North America (<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Toronto, Factor-Inwentash website, 2012). In the early 1950’s,<br />

the Faculty <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong>, which at that time was called the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong>, launched<br />

the first Doctor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong> program in Canada, and until the 1980’s, it was the only<br />

Canadian school with a <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong> doctoral program (<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Toronto, Factor-Inwentash<br />

website, 2012). The Factor-Inwentash Faculty <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong> currently <strong>of</strong>fers a Master <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong> (MSW), Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy in <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong> (PhD), and a new master’s Advanced<br />

Diploma Program in <strong>Social</strong> Service Administration (<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Toronto, Factor-Inwentash,<br />

Faculty <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong>, 2012). Within the MSW program, there is a two-year full-time program<br />

for students entering with a B.A., B.Sc., or equivalent, and a one year program with advanced<br />

standing for candidates entering with a BSW degree, with the option <strong>of</strong> full-time or part-time<br />

studies (<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Toronto, Factor-Inwentash, Faculty <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong>, 2012). The MSW<br />

program <strong>of</strong>fers five areas <strong>of</strong> specialization, which includes Children and Families, Gerontology,<br />

Mental Health and Health, <strong>Social</strong> Justice and Diversity, and <strong>Social</strong> Service Administration<br />

(<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Toronto, Factor-Inwentash website, 2012).<br />

The Factor-Inwentash Faculty <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong> has twenty-seven full-time faculty, fortysix<br />

affiliated faculty, twenty-two course instructors and teaching assistants, and twelve<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essors emeriti (<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Toronto, Factor-Inwentash, Faculty <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong>, 2012).<br />
